Press Release

City of Vero Beach to Temporarily Change Water Disinfection Process

Customers of the City of Vero Beach water system may notice a slight chlorine taste or odor in their tap water from April 7th through April 27th, 2019. During this period the City of Vero Beach Water Treatment Plant, as part of its annual maintenance activities, will temporarily change its method of disinfection. Chloramines, which are chlorine mixed with ammonia, are normally used. During this temporary change, free chlorine – without ammonia – will be used. At the end of the program, the treatment plant will switch back to using chloramines.

Free chlorine provides a somewhat stronger disinfection process than chloramines. Changing to free chlorine periodically provides additional protection against bacteria and helps ensure that the water remains safe and free of bacteria. These temporary conditions will not cause adverse health effects.  The water will remain safe for drinking and other normal uses.

Customers who use kidney dialysis machines should be aware that their water may contain chlorine, ammonia, or a mixture of the two during this period. Other specialized users of water such as tropical fish owners, businesses, hospitals, and blood/dialysis clinics, may need to make adjustments in their operations in order to continue to maintain their present water quality parameters.

The water treatment plant will resume adding ammonia to the chlorination process on April 28th, 2019.

Please call the City of Vero Beach Water and Sewer Department at (772) 978-5220 if you need further information on this temporary change in the treatment process.
